Celebrating Dr. Seuss

The other day we went to Heights Middle School to celebrate Dr. Seuss. Mrs. Mitchell had the students make the Cat in the Hat, hat. I would like to share with you how these hats were made. This may be something that you might like to use in your classroom.

  1. cut a large rectangle of red butcher paper (the height of a Seuss hat, and the width of the larger student's head).
  2. cut three strips of white paper the same width as the red sheet 9these are for the stripes.
  3. cut a hole in a paper plate making sure to keep four tabs to glue the red paper tube to.
  4. glue the white strips of paper on the red paper; spacing them evenly apart and leaving red at the top and bottom of the red paper.
  5. wrap the red paper around your head and glue the seam.
  6. place this tube on the paper plate, and glue the tabs that were left on the plate to the outside of the tube.
  7. The hat is complete!
