This was a lesson plan that I turned
in for this class for UNM. This class was extremely informative. I think that the thought of understanding where students
are and how to determine to move forward in the reading process, was a little scary for me. Due to this class I feel more
confident in this.
Guided Reading
Lesson Plan
Name: Mary Hovey
Date: October 16, 2007
Goal(s): The goal is to have the students
learn to recognize repetitive words as well as non-repetitive words in order to read and enjoy the book, “Things I Like”
written by Janet Stott.
Objectives Students will enjoy reading
through the story and participating in the corresponding activities.
Teaching/Learning Process
I. Introduction
· What text will you see? We will see text from “Things
I Like” written by Janet Stott. Why? Students will enjoy reading about
likes that could be similar to their own. They will enjoy reading the words for themselves and their group.
· How will you introduce the text? I will ask the students to name some things that they like.
· What will you invite the students to do? Students will share their likes and then learn how to read
about someone else’s likes.
· What types of questions will encourage the students to think critically and discuss issues/ideas? What
are some things that you like? What are some things that you dislike? What is it about these things that you like or dislike?
· What will you plan for those that finish first-other books on the topic, writing activity, maps to
explore, ect.? I will have those students that finish first draw pictures of things that they like. Their papers will be labeled
“I like”…and when they are finished, they will have their own book of likes.
· What will you do to bring out prior knowledge? I will share with the students the things that I like.
· What concepts of print will be your focus during this time? We will focus on repeating words.
Vocabulary Extension
· What key vocabulary might you focus on in this story? What does it mean to like something?
· How will you introduce the vocabulary words? I will introduce the vocabulary for like, by explaining
how I feel when I like something, and have them do the same.
· Are there any language features you want to focus on? We will focus on the repeating words.
II. Teaching/Learning
Activities
Read the Book
· How will you have students read? I will read to the students first. Next, I will have all of the students
read with me, and then, I will have the students read as groups and finally individually.
· What prompts will you use? I will use the book as a prompt, and corresponding pictures or stuffed animals
or objects from the story.
· How will you validate text? I plan on reading the text and introduce the text including the author
and what that means and the Illustrator and what that means.
Word Work
· What kind of word work do you plan? I plan on discussing repeating words, vocabulary, and focus on
questions from the students.
· What materials will you need? I will need the text, “Things I Like” written by Janet Stott.
I will also need several papers for each student labeled, “I like” for drawings. I will need corresponding stuffed
animals and objects to fit with the story.
· Discuss how you will develop the activity. I will develop this lesson by making it fun for the students
and making them involved. They will enjoy making their own books about things that they like.
· Discuss how you will give time for the students to work. I will allow time for each student to work
as I am allowing time for each group to read, each individual to read, and each individual to create their own book of likes.
Writing
· What will be your writing focus for the day? Our writing focus for the day will be the “I like”
book that each student will be creating.
· When will you have the students write? I will have the students write/draw when they have completed
individual readings.
· How much time will you allow? I will allow 15 minutes per day for two to three days for students to
work on their “I like” books.
Discussion
· How will you have students reflect on the reading? They will reflect on the reading by acknowledging
their on likes through their drawings.
· How much time will you allow for questions? I will allow 10 minutes for questions in group and then
will answer questions on an individual level when the students are working on their individual books.
· What comprehension strategies do you want to focus on? I would like to focus on the feeling of like.
What does it mean? How do you feel when you like something? Is it important to like yourself?
III. Closure – Wrap
Up
· Will you have students retell? I will have the students retell the story and then they will introduce
their stories. Which student(s)? All students will participate.
· Will you share what students wrote? I will share what the students wrote, by allowing each individual
to share what they have written/drawn.
· Will you review what was covered during the lesson? I think that it is important to review what was
covered, and I do plan on revisiting the lesson through review.
· Will you have students act out the lesson? I think that be incorporating the stuffed animals and other
objects in the story, I will have students re-tell the story by pointing to the individual items as they review the story.
· Will you have any other closure activities? I think that the activities listed above are sufficient
for this activity.
Accommodations
· What accommodations will you make? I will make the appropriate accommodations to make sure that all
of the students are in a safe, comfortable learning environment.
IV. Assessment/Evaluation
· How will you assess students? I will assess the students through their re-telling and reenactment of
the story. I will also make observations of the students as they work individually as well as in their groups.
Further Lessons
· How will you plan for the next lesson? I will plan for my next lesson based on my observations. I will
accentuate the things that worked and the students learned or excelled from. I will change the things that did not work, and
drop the things that did not seem to lend support to the lesson.
· How will this lesson help you? This lesson will help me to prepare for future lessons as stated above.
